A properly machined engine block is the foundation for any quality engine rebuilding project. Always begin with a casting that is designed to withstand the HP and torque you intend to subject the casting to.
For example, if you are building a forced-air induction SB Chev, that will make 600 ft/lbs of torque or more, you will need to purchase an after-market block. The after-market blocks feature thicker deck surfaces, steel 4-bolt main caps, thicker cylinder bores, and a higher nickel content than factory blocks.
